Žigi Horvat took two jerseys
First stage of the Istrian Spring Trophy took riders from Poreč to Labin. Adria Mobil’s Žiga Horvat was in very good position throughout the stage after he escaped together with four more cyclists. Main group caught him just before the finish, after he was the last man left in the breakaway. But Žiga got his consolation prize – two classifications jerseys.

Five escapees managed to create a gap of four minutes, but that went down in the last 30 kilometers. This is why Žiga Horvat attacked and only cyclist from Luxembourg was able to follow him. He dropped as well in the last kilometers and Žiga was left alone, with finish climb in front of him. He didn’t had enough strength to make it all the way to the city of Labin, but got two jerseys for the great effort on the stage. One for best rider on the intermediate sprints and one for best rider on the mountain finishes.

Danish cyclist Kasper Asgreen won in the sprint finish; he’s reigning European TT U23 champion, so he knows how to press hard on the pedals. Saturday’s stage will most likely decide on the overall winner, the stage has a very difficult finish with the climb to Oprtalj. Radoslav Rogina is in the great position for overall standings.

Srečko Glivar, sports director: “This is the sixth race of the season in Slovenian and Croatian Istria and we got sixth stage winner. This shows how good and equal teams are. You also need a bit of luck to take the victory, and today we didn’t had any. We hope we’ll do even better tomorrow.”

Žiga Horvat: “Today’s stage was 160 km long, mostly flat with a final climb to Labin. Five of us escaped right from the start. We had a good pace and managed to get a nice lead. Some in the group started to loose their strength toward the end. I was the only one that could answer on Wirtgen’s attack. We were riding at the max and managed to get close to Labin with 40 seconds gap. I attacked and escaped, but that was not enough. I was caught three kilometers before the finish line.”
