Magnus Cort Nielsen takes second stage in Istria

Magnus Cort Nielsen takes second stage in Istria
Danish rider had no problems staying in the yellow jersey. Today he won second stage in two days, becoming the first rider ever that won both Labin and Motovun stages on Istrian Spring Trophy. Matej Mugerli was our best rider today, finishing 11th with a mechanical problem.

We saw a very long escape of six riders in today’s 157 kilometers long stage. Cort Nielsen’s team Cult Energy Vital Water let them to create a gap of almost five minutes, but later took things in their own hands. They knew exactly what they were doing and caught the escaping riders 10 kilometers till the finish. As every year, a big group came under the hillside of Motovun.

Matej Mugerli, Adria Mobil Cycling, will explain what happened in the last kilometers: “We wanted to make a hard race, but didn’t manage to do that – nobody will work with us when we are among the escaping riders. Radoslav Rogina was the first to attack on the final climb, he was up front for the first half of the climb. We caught up with him 1,5 kilometer till the finish, when the accident happened. I hit him with my front wheel and broke one of the spokes. Wheel was not centered anymore and all chances of a good result went down the drain. Thought luck, but this is all part of our sport. You also need some good fortune to win, and today we didn’t had any.”

Final stage of the race will take riders from Pazin to Umag. Cort Nielsen just needs to get to the finish line in the first group and he will win the race, however the fight for the stage victory is wide open.
