Aljaž Jarc 37th, title goes to Italy
U23 race was dramatic all the way to the end and then some as the winner was decided by the race commissars. Best three Slovenians came in the finish line in the group with the three minutes gap, ours Aljaž Jarc was 37th.

Slovenia had a strong team with two Adria Mobil riders, but only one was racing for the top result. Žiga Horvat was involved in the crash in the worst possible moment and he lost the contact with the leaders and eventually finished the race way in the back. Aljaž Jarc was at the time of Žiga’s crash in the right place and keep the contact with the fastest on the crucial climb of the race. But later he didn’t attack in the last moment and had to settle with 37th place.

Best Slovenian on the race was Tilen Finkšt in 25th, Jarc and Žiga Jerman came to the finish line in the same group.

Aljaž Jarc after the race: “The race route was difficult, but it suited me; next to that we also had rain and strong wings. There were a lot of crashes toady, my teammate Žiga Horvat was also involved in one of them. That happened just ahead of five kilometers long climb on the 110th kilometer of the race – we knew the race will break in this place. I came to the top in the top-10. We had really strong wind on the top and we did a mistake and stayed too far in the back and couldn’t catch the first group. 20 riders escaped, we tried to catch them, but they were too strong. I was really great to race here, but I don’t have a good result due to the mistake. I’m sorry for this as there are not a lot of chances like this.”

Žiga Horvat did’t had a lot to say: “I felt good, but I lost all chances with the crash ahead of the decisive climb.”

Seven riders were in the final battle for the title, with Dutch Nils Eekhoff being the strongest in the sprint finish. But his joy didn’t last long as he was disqualified an hour later due to drafting behind the team car. Italian Samuele Battistella was eventually declared as the new U23 world champion.
