Today’s race didn’t go according to the “rules”. Escape from the start is usually unsuccessful, riders get some advantage, but are later tired and usually an easy pray for the main group. Today that was not the case. Four riders managed to create an unbelievable 12 minutes gap, which proved to be enough. Only by 10 seconds, but still enough. Adria Mobil’s riders were in the front row of the peloton for most of the race and were working really hard to catch the escapees, which also lead to the loss of power towards the end. Marko Kump however proved his strength and gave a clear signal that the team can count on him. This time he was just out of luck.
Team manager Boštjan Mervar: “I’m sorry for the riders who were working hard for the whole day. On the end we only needed a little bit of luck. We didn’t get a lot of help from other teams, most of them were only watching what we did, which is understandable to a certain point.”
Team Astana’s team director Giuseppe Martinelli also watched the race. He was very focused on his son Davide (Team Colpack) who took sixth.
Another interesting story… Second was Seid Lizde. His father Samir was an excellent rider from Banja Luka, Bosnia. During the war he escaped to Italy and started a new life there – Son Seid is the one who continues the family tradition.
