Primož Roglič second on Grand Prix Izola

Primož Roglič second on Grand Prix Izola
Second edition of Grand Prix Izola, opening race of the Slovenian season, was defined by the escape of five riders that were in the lead for most of the race. The group had the advantage of eight minutes at one point, which was enough for the success on the end. The battle for victory was fought on the laps around the city of Izola, Gregor Muhllberger of Austria won the race ahead of Adria Mobil’s Primožem Rogličem.

180 riders from 24 teams started this very demanding race. Primož Roglič and Gregor Muhllberger were two riders that took the biggest advantage of the situation with teams looking for each other and not doing enough. They came across the finish line about a minute ahead of peloton. The finish was unordinary, since it is very common on the spring races to have a sprint finish.

Primož Roglič, Adria Mobil Cycling: “I’m not fully satisfied with the second place. It was obvious that I don’t have a enough experiences with the finish situations, where you have to go head to head. We escaped very early in the race and I didn’t thought that we had enough gap. On the end I lost to one of the most talented young riders that already has a signed professional contract with Bora-Argon team.”

Team manager Boštjan Mervar was also not super happy, which only shows how big the ambitions of Adria Mobil are, most teams would be celebrating after a success like this. He told us after the race: “I’m leaving Izola with mixed feelings. Roglič was waiting too long for his attack; if he would start earlier he would have a better chance. We also saw that we have the fastest man in the peloton, for a second time in a raw this man was Marko Kump.”

Next chance for all the riders will come on Wednesday with the traditional spring race Trofei Umaga in the city of Umag, Croatia.
