Labin – to long for sprinters, to short for climbers

Labin – to long for sprinters, to short for climbers
Labin has a reputation of one of the hardest and most interesting race finishes in the area. Sergei Nikolaev of Russia was fastest on this year’s race, even the cat that crossed his line about 10 meters ahead of finish line couldn’t stop him. He managed to hold on his bike after this unexpected encounter, the cat went away with six lives remaining.

We saw first real battles on the first stage of the Istria Spring Trophy. Adria Mobil’s team manager Boštjan Mervar decided to attack with one of his best man in the middle of the stage. He send Primož Roglič ahead, that was after a very good eight place on the prologue. Group of nine escapees formed, with Roglič leading the group. The group managed to get 3 minutes gap, but that was not enough for the final success. Like in the past, the group sprint was on the program; Sergei Nikolaev won the stage and took the overall lead. Adria’s best rider was again Marko Kump, this time he finished in fifth. He went to fourth overall.

Primož Roglič was in the virtual yellow for a while, after the race he said: “I believe I can be happy with the today’s stage. I was in the escape, won the intermediate finish… Unfortunately we didn’t manage to make it all the way to the finish, but we were not far from that. I paid the price on the end and had hard time in the final climb. The battle continues tomorrow and we will see how will we do…”
