Damiano Cunego won high above the sea level

Damiano Cunego won high above the sea level
Shortest stage of Tour of Qinghai Lake finished with the climb to 4000 meters high Dadongshu Hill Puerto. Italian Damiano Cunego attached on the first of the climbs and won after the solo attack. Colombian Yonathan Monsalve is now the overall leader.

Team Adria Mobil Cycling is also satisfied with the outcome of the sixth stage. Their leader was fifth and is now seventh overall.

Coach Boštjan Mervar: “Radoslav Rogina was fifth today, and is now seventh overall. I quietly expected more, but we have to be happy with fifth. Stage started with three flat laps in the city of Qilian that lies on the altitude of 2700 meters, then we had 25 km long climb to Dadongshu Hill Puerto on the 4120 meters above sea level. Breakaway of seven riders was formed at the 30th kilometer, among them was also Andrea Borso. Andrea was actually the first man on the climb, together with another rider they had a lead of 45 seconds. With 20 kilometers to go a group of four cyclists created a new small group, and soon Damiano Cunego escaped from that also. Cunego was more than 5 minute behind in the overall standings, on the end he won with the minute and 30 seconds ahead of others. Other escapees were caught and the fight for yellow jersey was on. Radoslav attacked 5 km before the finish. Four more riders joined him, rider in yellow couldn’t follow. Cunego was out of reach by then, so they were only fighting for overall classifications. Gregor Gazvoda also had a decent finish of the stage, he was 22nd. Up next is another stage with first category climb, the stage will be 169 km long.”

Radoslav Rogina: “The results show that I did a good job, but I can’t be totally satisified. Looks like it will be very hard to improve on the overall standings, we now see how good the riders are that escaped in the first stage.”
